A Spooky Stay in a Once Bustling Gold Rush Town in Colorado

Over the last two weeks, the Eerie Outings crew had the opportunity to travel to Colorado for a much-needed vacation. The next few blog posts will detail some of the spooky and haunted destinations on our trip. The first stop on our road trip around Colorado was Victor.

Gold and Ghosts

Victor Colorado’s elevation is just under 10,000 feet above sea level. Victor and its nearby neighboring city of Cripple Creek became the second largest gold mining district in the country. Victor, once a bustling Gold Rush town with around 18,000 residents, now only has around 400 residents. Making it an eerily quiet, ghost-like town.

In the heart of the tiny downtown is a building that was home to a casino, brothel, and saloon. In 1899, the building was a causality to fire but was promptly rebuilt. With such a rich history, it is no wonder that the hotel is rumored to be haunted. Will you sleep with the lights on?

Footsteps in the Night

For two nights we stayed at The Black Monarch Boutique Hotel in a room themed to the notorious Chicago serial killer, H.H. Holmes. While we had no spooky interactions while staying at the hotel (not sure if our neighbors could say the same 😱), the rooms were well-appointed and cozy. The shared bathroom was clean. And the kitchen has the most important necessity, a wine opener. So make sure to add the Black Monarch and Victor to your list of haunted travel destinations if you head out to Colorado. The city will send chills down your spine at night with its eerie ghost-town-like presence.

Victor Trading Company

One of our favorite stops in Victor, Colorado was a shop called Victor Trading Company. Walking into the shop is a fun and rewarding experience. You’ll get to browse a high-quality collection of handcrafted goods ranging from brooms, tin cans, tin cookie cutters, letterpress prints, candles, customer jewelry, and so much more!

30 years ago, Sam and Karen Morrison moved to Victor to escape the big city life. They are happy to share stories of days gone by. You could spend hours learning about them and their amazing tiny store. Even finding out about their handcrafted products that were featured in movies and even some Disney parks. If you are ever making your way through Victor, make sure to add Victor Trading Company to your itinerary.
